An inspiring story of determination and a second chance! Meet Jeremiah Bourke, a 51-year-old who defied age and became the oldest recruit ever to graduate from the Garda College. But here's the twist: Jeremiah's journey is not just about breaking records; it's a powerful message to all of us.
Jeremiah, with his unwavering spirit, encourages people his age to chase their dreams, proving that it's never too late. He admits it's a tough job, but his enthusiasm is infectious.
"You're never too old to pursue your passions," he says. "If you have the ability, why not give it a shot? I say, go for it!"
And Jeremiah's words resonate deeply. He's living proof that age is just a number.
But Jeremiah's story is just one of many inspiring tales from the recent Garda College graduation. Among the 194 new graduates, we find Amy Ni Riada, a former RTÉ journalist, who traded her media career for a role in An Garda Síochána.
Amy, from Castleisland, Co. Kerry, found her calling in high-pressure environments and diverse roles. She was inspired by the response to the 2023 Dublin riots, and now, she's ready to make a difference.
"It was an eye-opening experience," she says. "I wanted to be a part of that positive change."
And this is where it gets interesting. Amy's previous work in climate change, social issues, and violence against women in East Africa, positions her perfectly within An Garda Síochána to work with the most vulnerable in society.
Among the new graduates, we also meet Kristina Courtney, who left her career in communications and media production to join the gardai. Inspired by her work on RTÉ's Crimecall, Kristina is ready to take on the challenge of dealing with real-life criminals.
"I'm up for the challenge," she says with determination.
Then there's Adam O'Rourke, a Dubliner who joined An Garda Síochána to help people and challenge himself. Previously serving with the Defence Forces in Lebanon, Adam is now stationed in Blackrock, Dublin, and is eager to make a positive impact.
"It's a fantastic day," he says. "I'm thrilled to start making a difference."
The recent graduation at the Garda College in Templemore, Co. Tipperary, is a testament to the diverse backgrounds and inspiring journeys of these new recruits. With the largest single attestation of new gardai since 2019, the college is witnessing a new era of growth and dedication.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin, speaking at the college, emphasized the honor of witnessing this growth and welcoming the newest members of An Garda Síochána.
"Today is a proud day," Commissioner Justin Kelly said. "A day to celebrate and reflect on the journey. Today marks the beginning of a new career and a new chapter for these dedicated individuals."
