Measles Outbreak Alert: 171 Cases in 9 States - What You Need to Know (2026)

A concerning surge of measles cases is sweeping across the United States, raising alarms among health officials and parents alike. According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least 171 confirmed measles cases have been reported in nine states so far this year. This represents a significant increase, and the situation demands our attention.

The states currently grappling with confirmed cases include Arizona, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia. South Carolina, in particular, has been battling an outbreak since early October, with a majority of cases concentrated in Spartanburg County, which borders North Carolina.

But here's where it gets controversial... Health officials announced earlier this week that at least 124 new measles cases have been reported in South Carolina since last Friday. Utah is also experiencing an ongoing outbreak that began last year in June. As of Tuesday, the state's measles cases have surpassed 200, with 147 of those in the southwest region, but spreading further north, according to data from the Utah Department of Health and Human Services.

Officials have confirmed that the measles cases in southwest Utah and further north are linked to the same strain of the virus that spread from Texas last year. David Heaton, a public information officer at the Southwest Utah Department of Public Health, stated, "Our outbreak is the same strain that was in the Texas outbreak."

Measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000. However, experts are increasingly concerned that it will become endemic again soon, meaning continuous spread for more than a year throughout the country. As Heaton noted, "At this rate, our outbreak will be, you know, part of the United States outbreaks that that together may, we may lose that eradicated status for a while, just because of those numbers.”

Additionally, Georgia, Oregon, and Virginia have each reported their first measles cases of 2026 in recent days.

And this is the part most people miss... The CDC reports that approximately 95% of the nationally confirmed cases are among individuals who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown. Only 2% of cases are among those who have received one dose of the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine, and another 2% are among those who received the recommended two doses. The majority of cases involve patients under the age of 19, and about 1% of all U.S. measles patients have been hospitalized.

This rise in cases comes as the U.S. recorded its highest number of measles cases since 1992. Last year, the U.S. saw 2,242 cases, with illnesses reported in more than 40 states. In comparison, there were nearly 50 outbreaks nationally last year, compared to 16 in 2024 and just four in 2023, according to CDC data. Almost 90% of cases were associated with outbreaks.

Sadly, at least three deaths were recorded in 2025, including two among unvaccinated school-aged children in Texas and one among an unvaccinated adult in New Mexico, marking the first U.S. deaths from measles in a decade.

The CDC currently recommends that people receive two doses of the MMR vaccine. The first dose should be administered between 12 and 15 months of age, and the second between 4 and 6 years old. One dose is 93% effective, and two doses are 97% effective against measles, according to the CDC.

However, vaccination rates have been lagging in recent years. During the 2024-2025 school year, 92.5% of kindergartners received the MMR vaccine. This is slightly lower than the 92.7% seen in the previous school year and the 95.2% seen in the 2019-2020 school year, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
