In a bold move that has caught the attention of the boxing world, Matchroom Boxing's CEO, Frank Smith, has shared his thoughts regarding Jai Opetaia's decision to join forces with Dana White and Zuffa Boxing. This shift comes after Opetaia announced last week that he and his long-time promoter, Tasman Fighters, will now collaborate with White, signaling White’s increasing ambitions in the boxing arena.
Zuffa Boxing is set to make its debut this Friday at the UFC APEX, with the highly anticipated matchup between Callum Walsh and Carlos Ocampo as the main event, marking the beginning of its first broadcast on Paramount Plus. There are also plans for additional events in the upcoming months, highlighting the rapid expansion of Zuffa's reach within the sport.
Securing a talent like Opetaia is a significant achievement for White. The IBF cruiserweight champion is regarded as a likely candidate to become an undisputed champion in the 200-pound weight class and could even become a formidable competitor in the heavyweight division if he decides to move up in weight.
Matchroom partnered with Opetaia and Tasman Fighters starting in July 2023. Although they were not involved in Opetaia's recent title defense against Huseyin Cinkara, they had previously worked together through several fights, including earlier title defenses.
In an interview with IFL TV, Smith addressed Opetaia's departure while maintaining a reflective perspective on losing a fighter to a competing promotion. "It is what it is. Fighters come, fighters go. In boxing, having someone who is fully dedicated to you is crucial, especially when it’s a business focused on commercial success," he explained.
Smith emphasized the importance of a long-term vision, noting that not all fighters share this outlook. He acknowledged that while this situation is disappointing, there’s no merit in dwelling on it as Matchroom looks to the future.
"There are countless opportunities ahead. However, we don’t have an infinite amount of financial resources; otherwise, we wouldn’t be operating as a business. We are here to conduct business, after all. While I’m not dismissing Opetaia’s significance, we must shift our focus to the other 94 fighters on our roster. Jai Opetaia is indeed a remarkable fighter, but we also have other athletes who, while they may not match his skill level, present greater commercial potential," he stated.
Ultimately, Smith's message is quite clear: the arrival of Zuffa may shake things up in the boxing landscape, but Matchroom remains dedicated to nurturing the talents still under its banner and forging ahead with its business endeavors.
