GOP Senators vs. Netflix CEO: A Battle Over Woke Content and Merger Concerns (2026)

The battle for Warner Bros. has ignited a fiery debate in Washington, with Netflix’s co-CEO facing a grilling over accusations of spreading “woke propaganda.” Senate Republicans recently put Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos in the hot seat during a hearing concerning the streamer’s ambitious pursuit of Warner Bros.’ film and streaming assets. The senators didn't hold back, labeling the platform a “left-wing company” with a history of promoting “wokeness” and what they described as “propaganda.”

While typically composed, Sarandos appeared visibly flustered as he fielded a barrage of pointed questions. These inquiries zeroed in on common Republican grievances regarding diversity initiatives, perceived political bias, and the representation of transgender individuals within Netflix’s content. The hearing took place before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy, and Consumer Rights.

Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, was particularly vocal. He accused Netflix of being a “left-wing company,” drawing a tangent from the recent politically charged Grammy Awards, which aired on CBS, the flagship network of rival media conglomerate Paramount Skydance. Interestingly, Paramount Skydance is also in the running to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, though their initial offer was recently rejected by shareholders.

Cruz didn't stop there. After highlighting Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings’ significant contributions to Democratic campaigns, he turned his attention to one of Warner Bros.’ major brands. He pressed Sarandos on how audiences could be assured that a merger wouldn’t transform the combined entity into a joint “propaganda outlet.” Cruz didn't mince words about CNN, a Warner Bros. property, calling it a “dumpster fire” and lamenting its lack of objectivity and journalism.

In his defense, Sarandos emphasized that Netflix is fundamentally an entertainment business. He explained to Cruz that when subscribers tune in, their primary goal is to be entertained, suggesting that pushing a political agenda would, in fact, be a detrimental business decision.

But here's where it gets controversial: Sarandos was also compelled to engage in the ongoing culture war by Republican Senators Josh Hawley and Eric Schmitt from Missouri.

Senator Schmitt expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that a “vast majority” of Netflix’s current offerings are “overwhelmingly woke” and don't resonate with the broader American public. He further contended that both Netflix and Sarandos have actively promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and “wokeness,” suggesting that the streamer’s content has become synonymous with the modern trend of “race swapping” characters, whether historical, real-life, or fictional.

Senator Hawley then questioned why Netflix features children’s programming that, in his view, “promotes a transgender ideology.”

Sarandos pushed back against both senators’ lines of questioning. He asserted that Netflix offers a wide spectrum of programming catering to individuals across the political spectrum – left, right, and center. He also pointed out that the platform provides sophisticated tools for parents to manage the content their children can access.

Sarandos did, however, find a moment to offer some conciliatory remarks. He acknowledged that President Trump’s scrutiny of the proposed $83 billion deal was, in his experience, fair. He expressed his belief that the President has consistently shown interest in protecting and creating American jobs and that the merger would ultimately be judged on its own merits.

It's worth noting that President Trump had previously signaled his preference for Paramount Skydance in the competition for Warner Bros. Discovery. Following a substantial $108.4 billion bid from the entertainment monolith in December, Trump suggested that any deal should include promises to reform CNN. He was quite direct, stating that he didn't believe the current leadership of CNN, whom he described as a “very dishonest group of people,” should be allowed to continue.

Now, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Do you believe that entertainment platforms have a responsibility to remain politically neutral, or is it inevitable and even beneficial for them to reflect diverse viewpoints? And when it comes to content for children, where do you draw the line on what’s appropriate? Share your opinions in the comments below!
