The Power of Touch: A Game-Changing Experience
Inside the Ball Arena in Denver, a group of Nuggets fans recently had an extraordinary opportunity. For the first time, blind and low-vision fans were able to immerse themselves in the game like never before, thanks to innovative technology.
Imagine being able to feel every pass, shot, and fast break right through your fingertips! That's exactly what Julie and Dan Deaton, long-time Nuggets fans, got to experience.
Julie Deaton, an executive director at the Colorado Center for the Blind, was one of the first to try out OneCourt's tactile broadcast technology. This groundbreaking device uses haptic feedback, translating live ball movement and gameplay into vibrations that can be felt beneath the user's fingertips.
"Most people take for granted the ability to see the game in real-time," Deaton shared before the game. "But with this technology, I get to feel the action on the court. I'm thrilled to give it a go!"
Deaton's work at the Colorado Center for the Blind is all about empowering individuals who have lost their vision. The center teaches independence, offering skills like independent travel with canes and public transport, safe cooking and cleaning, adaptive technology use, Braille reading, and employment preparation. They also focus on building confidence through positive role models for blind children.
"Losing your vision doesn't mean your life is over," Deaton emphasized. "You can still fully engage and participate in all aspects of life."
This mindset extends to her love for sports, especially basketball. As a lifelong Coloradan, Deaton has been a fan since the Denver Rockets days. While she typically listens to games on the radio, attending in person is a rare treat.
"The game's pace and energy are incredible," she said. "Listening on the radio is great, but being in the arena is a whole different experience."
And Friday night's game was exceptional. The OneCourt device mirrored the court in real-time, allowing blind and low-vision fans to track the ball's position, pace, and movement through touch. Deaton described it as a game-changer, offering an active participation she'd never had before at a live game.
"It's like visiting a museum where you can touch the exhibits instead of just looking at pictures," she explained. "Using multiple senses at once is so powerful and often underestimated."
Deaton hopes this technology expands across sports, providing more opportunities for blind people to actively engage.
"The key is having the chance to participate fully in life," she said. "And this technology is a huge step forward."
The Denver Nuggets, Ticketmaster, and OneCourt have teamed up to make this technology available at every home game this season. Five devices are provided free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis through Guest Services.
