The Angels' projected payroll for this year is $180 million, a significant drop from the estimated $206 million in 2025, excluding Anthony Rendon's deferred contract. This financial adjustment is partly due to the club's broadcast rights situation, as they terminate their contract with Main Street Sports, resulting in a loss of significant revenue from TV deals for the second consecutive year. The Angels are now deciding between producing their own games or allowing MLB to handle the broadcasts for roughly half the league, a decision that has led to the uncertainty causing the team to skip broadcasting Cactus League games this spring.
Moreno acknowledged the challenges, stating, 'We took a cut when we went from FOX to Main Street/FanDuel and it’s going down again. But right now, we’re a free agent.' Despite the financial constraints, Minasian's offseason moves were impressive, including trades for right-hander Grayson Rodriguez and outfielder Josh Lowe, as well as one-year deals with players like right-hander Alek Manoah, third baseman Yoán Moncada, and relievers Kirby Yates, Jordan Romano, and Drew Pomeranz. Moreno expressed his satisfaction with Minasian's performance, but also emphasized the need for improvements this season, as the team has not had a winning record since 2015.
The Angels' payroll is expected to increase once the television deal is finalized, and Moreno assured that the settlement with the family of Tyler Skaggs did not impact the payroll. He also highlighted the team's flexibility due to the absence of long-term contracts and the upcoming need to pay younger players through arbitration. Additionally, Moreno discussed the team's stadium renovations, including improvements to Angel Stadium and Tempe Diablo Stadium, and his commitment to maintaining a debt-free status since purchasing the club in 2004. Despite his age, Moreno remains focused on the team's success and is not actively seeking outside investors.
