American Airlines' new initiative to score flight attendants based on various metrics has sparked debate and concern. While the idea of performance-based evaluation is appealing, the implementation raises several red flags. The Me@Work program, as it's called, aims to assess flight attendants over the last 12 months using customer experience, operational contributions, and coded delays as key indicators. However, this approach is problematic for several reasons.
Firstly, the system may not accurately reflect individual performance. Flight attendants' overall scores could be influenced by factors beyond their control, such as the type of flights they operate. For instance, a flight attendant working primarily on business class transatlantic flights might receive a different net promoter score compared to one serving domestic routes. This disparity highlights the challenge of creating a fair and consistent evaluation method.
Secondly, the initiative is likely to face significant pushback from unions and flight attendants. The current tense relationship between management and the union, following a vote of no confidence in CEO Robert Isom, further complicates matters. Flight attendants may perceive this scoring system as yet another layer of scrutiny and competition, especially if there are no clear repercussions or rewards associated with the scores.
In my opinion, while the intention behind the Me@Work program is to improve accountability, the execution is flawed. The system's potential to create tension and dissatisfaction among flight attendants, coupled with its questionable effectiveness, suggests that American Airlines should reconsider its approach. Instead of focusing solely on performance-based evaluation, the airline could explore alternative methods that foster a more collaborative and supportive environment for flight attendants, ultimately benefiting both the employees and the overall customer experience.
